Winter Decluttering: How to Create a Warm and Inviting Space After the Holidays

Refresh your home after the holidays with these winter decluttering tips. Learn how to organize, deep clean, and create a warm, inviting space with cozy winter decor and intentional storage solutions

As the holiday season winds down, the festive glow of twinkling lights and shimmering decor can leave behind an overwhelming sense of clutter. And I don’t say overwhelming lightly. While the season brings joy and togetherness, it also often brings an excess of stuff—presents, decorations, and perhaps a touch of chaos. Winter is the perfect time to declutter and transform your home into a warm, inviting haven that feels both cozy and refreshing.

Start with a Post-Holiday Reset

The first step to winter decluttering is reclaiming your home after the holidays. Begin by removing all seasonal decor. As you pack away ornaments, garlands, and wreaths, take inventory:

Toss broken items. If that string of lights fizzled out for good, it’s time to say goodbye.

Donate unused decorations. If you haven’t displayed certain items in years, consider giving them to someone who will enjoy them.

Organize as you store. Use labeled bins and pack decor by category or room to make next year’s decorating easier.

Once the holiday decor is stored, take a moment to reset your space. Vacuum, dust, and wipe down surfaces to create a clean slate.

Tackle Clutter Room by Room

Decluttering an entire house can feel overwhelming, especially in the post-holiday season. Break it into manageable tasks by focusing on one room at a time.

Living Room

This is often the heart of the home, especially in winter. Keep only the essentials—pillows, throws, and decor that bring warmth to the space. Use storage baskets or ottomans to conceal toys, books, and other everyday items.

Kitchen

The holidays often leave kitchens overflowing with extra gadgets, mismatched containers, or expired pantry items. Clear your countertops, sort through your pantry, and donate any unopened non-perishables you won’t use.

Bedrooms

Freshen up bedrooms by decluttering nightstands, under-bed storage, and closets. If you received new clothes or linens, donate older items to create balance.

Bathroom

Winter is a great time to declutter your bathroom cabinets. Discard expired toiletries and streamline your skincare and cleaning products to just the essentials. While you’re at it, give it a good wipe down. There is nothing better than and organized and deep cleaned bathroom.

Create a Cozy Atmosphere

Once your home is free of clutter, focus on creating a warm and inviting ambiance. Decluttering doesn’t mean stripping your home of character; instead, it makes room for intentional touches that evoke comfort and joy, without having hundreds of things to clean or pick up daily.

Layer Textures

This is my favorite thing to do to create cozier spaces. Add soft blankets, textured pillows, and plush rugs to create a cozy winter feel. Neutral tones with pops of warm hues like rust, gold, or forest green work beautifully. When we added our rug and chunky blankets to our living room, the space went from feeling cold to immediately feeling cozy and inviting.

Embrace Natural Elements

Bring in natural decor like dried flowers, pinecones, or wooden accents. These simple touches create a calming, grounded atmosphere. My personal favorite is warm wood accents.

Maximize Lighting

Winter days can be dark, so make the most of natural light. Pull back heavy curtains during the day, and in the evening, use warm, soft lighting with lamps, candles, or string lights. I’ve been loving using battery-operated taper candles and some non-toxic candles to create the perfect evening ambiance.

Incorporate Cozy Scents

Aromatherapy can transform the mood of your home. Use essential oils like lavender, cedarwood, or cinnamon to evoke calm and warmth. We have been using essential oils for five years and it’s fun being able to craft your own cozy smells throughout your home.

Organize with Intention

Decluttering isn’t just about removing items; it’s about rethinking how your home functions. Use this time to implement organizational systems that align with your daily life. Once I became a mom, organizational systems became the only thing that kept me sane. Try it for yourself too.

Simplify Storage

Invest in storage solutions that are both functional and beautiful. Baskets, glass jars, or labeled bins can help you keep essentials organized while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic.

Rotate Seasonal Items

Store out-of-season clothing, decor, and accessories to free up space. Clear bins or vacuum-sealed bags are perfect for tucking away bulky winter gear when spring arrives.

Designate Drop Zones

Winter often brings extra gear—coats, boots, scarves, and hats. Create a dedicated space near the entryway for these items to keep them from piling up throughout the house. We don’t have a ton of closet space in our home, so getting wall hooks or even a coat tree is the perfect solution for this.

6. Practice Gratitude for Less

As you declutter, reflect on the items you choose to keep. Each piece in your home should have a purpose, whether it’s functional, sentimental, or simply beautiful. Decluttering is an act of gratitude—it allows you to appreciate what you have while letting go of what no longer serves you.

7. Maintain the Calm

Decluttering is not a one-time event but an ongoing practice. Here are a few habits to help maintain your newly cozy space:

Adopt a one-in, one-out rule. For every new item that comes in, let go of something old.

Set daily reset routines. Spend 10-15 minutes each evening tidying up your home.

Revisit problem areas regularly. Declutter high-traffic zones like entryways, kitchen counters, or kids’ play areas on a monthly basis.

8. Embrace Slow Living This Winter

A decluttered home is the perfect foundation for embracing the slower pace of winter. With fewer distractions, you can savor the season—whether it’s baking bread with your kids, curling up with a good book, or simply watching the snow fall.

I truly believe that intentional living begins with a mindful approach to our homes. By decluttering after the holidays, you’re not just creating a warm and inviting space; you’re cultivating an environment where joy, connection, and purpose can thrive.

Winter decluttering is a chance to start the new year with clarity and intention. By letting go of excess and prioritizing what truly matters, you create a home that feels both comforting and inspiring—a space where you and your family can flourish.
