Intentional Motherhood: How To Be More Present in Everyday Moments
Motherhood moves fast. One moment, you’re rocking a newborn at 2 AM, and the next, you’re watching them race across the backyard, wondering where the time went. In the whirlwind of daily responsibilities, it’s easy to feel like you’re just going through the motions rather than truly soaking in the moments that matter. Sometimes we lose sight on how to be more present in everyday moments with our children.
If you’ve ever found yourself scrolling on your phone while your child tugs at your sleeve or rushing through bedtime stories just to check off another task, you’re not alone. But the beauty of intentional motherhood is that you can slow down and create deeper connections—right where you are.
This post will walk you through practical ways to be more present in your daily motherhood journey, so you can embrace slow living, find joy in the little things, and truly experience the moments that make up your child’s childhood.
And remember, none of our experts. These are practical tips I have found helped me in the midst of trying to be more present in motherhood and intentional living.
What is Intentional Motherhood?
Intentional motherhood is the practice of being fully present, engaged, and mindful in the way you raise your children. It’s about prioritizing connection over productivity, presence over distraction, and simple joys over societal pressure to do more. And I am SO guilty of sometimes letting societal pressure get the best of me on this journey of motherhood.
Being intentional doesn’t mean adding more to your plate. Instead, it’s about shifting your focus—choosing what truly matters and letting go of the rest. And if you’re naturally a high-achiever, this part can be the hardest to practice.
Benefits of Intentional Motherhood:
✔️ Strengthens the bond between you and your children
✔️ Reduces mom guilt by aligning your actions with your values
✔️ Encourages mindfulness and gratitude in daily life
✔️ Creates a calmer, more connected home environment
So, how do you start incorporating intentional motherhood into your daily routine?
1. Start The Day With Presence
The tone of your day is often set within the first hour. Instead of waking up and immediately checking your phone, create a simple morning rhythm that allows you to be fully present. Putting your phone on sleep mode the night before with a set bedtime and wake up windows really minimizes the usage of your phone early in the morning, too.
Try This:
Wake up 15-30 minutes before your kids to enjoy quiet time with coffee, journaling, or reading.
Set an intention for the day—whether it’s to listen more, play more, or be more patient.
Greet your children warmly and without distractions—eye contact and a hug go a long way.
Starting your morning slowly helps you approach the day with mindfulness rather than stress.
2. Put The Phone Down
We live in a world where our phones constantly pull us away from the present moment. If you’re struggling with being present, consider setting boundaries around screen time—for both you and your kids.
Try This:
Create “phone-free zones” during meals, playtime, or bedtime routines.
Set a timer for social media scrolling so it doesn’t eat into your quality time.
Use your phone intentionally—for capturing moments, not escaping them.
By minimizing distractions, you’ll naturally feel more connected to your children and the moments unfolding in front of you.
3. Slow Down Your Daily Routines
Motherhood is full of mundane moments—getting dressed, making meals, driving to activities. But these moments hold opportunities for deep connection and presence.
Try This:
Turn mealtime into a conversation hub—ask about your child’s favorite part of the day.
Make chores interactive—invite your kids to help fold laundry or stir the sourdough starter.
Embrace slower living—walk instead of rush, listen instead of multitask.
When you slow down and engage, the ordinary moments of motherhood become meaningful.
4. Focus On One Thing At a Time
Multitasking might feel productive, but it often steals presence. When you’re trying to do too much at once, you’re neither fully here nor fully there. I am beyond guilty of this because I felt like I could get more done doing multiple things at once. What it really creates is more chaos and not being present.
Try This:
When playing with your child, put away distractions and give them your full attention.
Instead of thinking about your to-do list while reading bedtime stories, savor the moment.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, prioritize just one meaningful task at a time.
Being fully engaged in one thing at a time creates deeper connections and helps you truly experience motherhood.
5. Embrace Imperfection and Let Go Of Guilt
THIS ONE! Let’s repeat it again, mamas. Embrace imperrection and LET GO of the guilt.
Intentional motherhood isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being present. Some days will feel chaotic. Some moments will slip by unnoticed. And that’s okay.
Instead of feeling guilty, give yourself grace and return to presence when you can.
Try This:
Shift your mindset from “I have to do everything” to “I get to experience this moment.”
Release unrealistic expectations and embrace the beauty in the everyday mess.
Remember that your presence matters more than a perfect home, routine, or schedule.
Your children won’t remember how clean the house was—they’ll remember how you made them feel.
Final Thoughts…Presence Over Perfection
Intentional motherhood isn’t about adding more to your to-do list—it’s about simplifying, slowing down, and making space for the things that matter most.
By starting your day with presence, putting distractions aside, slowing down, focusing on one thing at a time, and giving yourself grace, you can create a motherhood experience that is rich, meaningful, and truly connected.
