As winter sets in, I don’t know about you, but for me there is something so inviting about transforming your home into a warm haven. I want my home to be a place where I can escape the chill and fully embrace the season. Creating a cozy space does not have to be complicated or expensive–it’s all about layering comfort, warmth, and intention into areas of your home. I’ve compiled five simple and easy ways to make your home feel cozy for winter while staying true to traditional homemaking values.

1. Layer Textiles for Warmth and Comfort

Think blankets, pillows, rugs. Nothing says cozy like layers of soft and warm comfort. Adding in blankets, pillows, and rugs instantly creates a sense of comfort while keeping the winter chill at bay. Here is where you can get super creative and even layer different blankets and pillows based on what your personal style preference is.

  • Throw Blankets: Choose chunky knit throws or cotton blankets in seasonal colors like deep red, burnt orange, or forest green to add texture and warmth to your living space.
  • Rugs: If your home as hard floors, a thick area rug will keep your feet warm and make the room feel more inviting. There are always ways of layering rugs as well, depending on how thick your rug is or your style.
  • Pillows: My personal favorite. I love to purchase 18×18 pillow inserts, and then buy pillow covers to swap out seasonally. This works especially well during the winter months to make your living room feel cozy.

By layering different textiles, you’ll create a cozy, welcoming space perfect for curling up with a good book or sharing a warm beverage with loved ones.

2. Incorporate Warm Lighting

Lighting plays a huge role in how a space feels. For winter, focus on creating a soft, warm glow that sort of mimics the ambiance of a fireplace or a cozier room that you imagine sitting with candlelight (my personal favorite).

Now I’m not saying go out and buy all new lighting for your home, but there are budget-friendly ways to incorporate this warmth to your already existing living spaces.

  • Switch Bulbs: Replace any cool-toned light bulbs with warm-toned ones to instantly change the feel and mood of the room. I found these practical light bulbs that have a switch on the light bulb that let’s you choose from several light tones ranging from cool to warm. This way you’re not buying new light bulbs every season, just flipping the switch on each bulb.
  • Add Soft Light Sources: Think string lights, table lamps, and candles. Just adding these different kinds of lighting throughout your home will create cozy corners wherever you choose. Flameless LED candles are all the excitement right now, and I found myself buying them more than I do taper candles lately.

3. Bring the Outdoors Inside

Winter is the perfect time to bring natural elements into your home decor. These simple touches add texture, warmth, and a connection to the season.

My favorite is greenery. Think pine or evergreen branches, pinecones, or even dried orange slices. You can arrange them in vases or along mantles. Another favorite of mine is simple evergreen wreaths that you can swap out with the seasons.

Another element that you can bring the outside inside your home is wood accents. My kitchen table is a place I love to add this. You can use wooden trays, bowls, or even cutting boards as decor. This brings an organic grounded feel to your space.

Last, but not least, combining items like greenery and unscented candles or winter berries to center pieces just screams winter to me. This is how you can create different looks based on your style, but also creating warmth with these nature elements.

4. Add Seasonal Scents

This has to be my favorite way to create a cozy home in the winter. You know that I prefer to be as low tox as I can when it comes to fragrance, however there are so many ways to do this without adding harsh chemicals to your home. Scent is a powerful way to make your home feel cozy and inviting. Winter scents like cinnamon, vanilla, and pine can transport you to a world of comfort.

Here’s how you can add seasonal scents:

  • Simmer Pots: Create a stovetop simmer pot with ingredients like orange peels, cinnamon sticks and cloves to fill your home with a warm, inviting aroma. I like to add a few fresh cranberries in there too. If you’re wanting to take it up a notch, here’s my favorite glass simmer pot so you can see how cozy it looks while it’s simmering.
  • Essential Oils: Use a diffuser with oils such as cedarwood, peppermint, or sweet orange for a natural scent. My favorite quality essential oils are Young Living. But you can also search your local Whole Foods or Amazon, however I find that they are not as good quality as the ones I purchase from Young Living.
  • Bake Seasonal Treats: You already know sourdough is my jam, but there are so many other baked treats that compliment the cold winter season too. Bake gingerbread cookies, sourdough cinnamon rolls, or your favorite cookie recipe. This will also fill your home warm sweet scents, but also will create cherished family moments.

These small touches will keep your home smelling as cozy as it feels.

5. Decluttering to Create a Serene Space

Clutter creates a cluttered mind. I truly believe this and saw a world of a difference when I began to declutter my home. Clutter can also make even the coziest space feel chaotic and busy. With all the time we spend indoors in the winter, it is the perfect time to tidy up. One our space is clutter-free, we can create an even more serene environment.

  • Store Seasonal Items: Put away fall or summer items that may be still lingering and replace it with organized storage for winter essentials such as scarves, gloves, and boots.
  • Evening Routine: One of the most intentional things you can do for yourself and home is spending 10 minutes each night tidying up high-traffic areas. For our family that is our kitchen and living room. I do this after putting my daughter to bed each night. I can’t tell you how good I feel after doing this. It feels like I can truly enjoy the cozy home I’ve created at the end of each day.
  • Cozy Storage Solutions: Use woven baskets or bins to store extra blankets, books, or toys while keeping your home stylish but also functional. One of my favorite ways to store blankets is a good blanket ladder. It’s sleek, functional, and does not take up much space.

Transforming your home into a cozy winter haven does not have to be overwhelming. By layering textiles, adding warm lighting, bringing in natural elements, infusing seasonal scents, and decluttering, you can create a spce that feels warm, inviting and uniquely yours.
